What is Pokerogue?

Pokerogue blends the best of Pokémon and roguelikes. It’s not just about battling — it’s about unlocking, upgrading, and optimizing your Pokémon team to go further. You start with a basic team and, as you progress, you unlock new Pokémon and abilities that improve your chances in future runs. Every time your 6 Pokémon faint, you start over — but with the upgrades you’ve earned.

What really hooks you, as with all roguelikes, is the process of unlocking and upgrading. Every “run” gives you new team-building options, and that constant progress is super motivating. One thing I personally love (even if it’s not the most exciting feature for everyone) is that the game gives you a break every 10 turns or battles to heal up. It’s a breather that keeps things from getting too frustrating if things go wrong.

If you love the thrill of not knowing what you’ll get, the gacha system with tickets is incredibly addictive. The tickets you earn during runs can be spent on Pokémon eggs with special abilities — including shiny ones — adding a lucky, exciting twist to every session.

Once you reach level 200 (yes, 200), the game enters an infinite mode. The only limit is your own will to keep playing, upgrading, and unlocking new Pokémon. It’s endless progress!

Core Mechanics & Progression

  • Initial Pokémon Selection: You start with 10 points to build your team. Each Pokémon has a point cost based on their power, but you can reduce this cost using candies.
  • Captures & Unlocks: Every time you catch a Pokémon during a run, it becomes available for future games. Think of it like character unlocking — but better. The more you catch, the more options you unlock.
  • Candies: When you use or catch a Pokémon, you also earn candies (we’re all going to get Pokémon-induced diabetes). These are extremely valuable: you can use them to reduce a Pokémon’s cost or to upgrade and power them up.
  • Tickets & Eggs: Tickets earned from runs can be spent on Pokémon eggs — and that’s where the magic happens. Just like Japanese gacha systems, it’s completely addictive (though I only indulge via YouTube, otherwise my wallet would cry lol). Each ticket opens an egg, and you never know what you’re going to get. It could be an epic rarity or a basic Pokémon — but when something awesome pops up, it’s pure joy.
Pro tip: If you get a shiny Pokémon, make sure to add it to your team — they increase your item luck after each battle.
Shiny Stunfisk go brrrrrrr

Graphics Style

The pixel art strikes a perfect gen 5 visual style. The visual design recalls classic Pokémon games — the kind you played until your eyes were square. It’s simple, but fits this type of game perfectly, with a clean, charming, and elegant aesthetic.

Device Compatibility

Is it natively supported or does it need an emulator?

  • Fully browser-based — no emulator needed.

Does it run smoothly? Any bugs or audio glitches?

  • Generally very smooth. However, restarting or exiting a run can sometimes cause occasional freezes, requiring a page refresh. You might also lose a couple of turns’ worth of progress.

Are the controls usable on all devices?

  • Controls:
    • Keyboard or Gamepad (PC)
    • Gamepad (on Android devices)
    • On-screen virtual controller (if you don’t have a gamepad for your Android/iOS device)

Installation or Access

Web game, ROM, or app?

  • It’s a web game — no installation needed.

URLs

Need BIOS, emulator, or special config?

  • Just a browser and an internet connection.

Replayability

Extremely high. Every run is different, with unique builds, routes, events, and choices. Permanent upgrades (tickets, candies, unlocked Pokémon) keep it addictive.

✅ General Pros

  • Deep and addictive gameplay: Strategic turn-based combat and evolving Pokémon upgrades make each run feel unique and full of important decisions.
  • High replayability: Every run brings new Pokémon combinations, random events, and fresh challenges. Though the game is “complete” at level 200, it continues infinitely beyond that — the fun never stops.
  • Charming pixel art: Retro visuals pay homage to classic Pokémon, and the clean design keeps it from feeling outdated. Pokémon sprites are well-crafted and consistent.
  • Cross-platform accessibility: Being a web game, it’s playable on almost any device — from PC to smartphones — with no need to install anything.
  • Gamepad support: Keyboard and physical controller compatibility make it super comfortable, especially on larger devices or portable consoles.
  • Satisfying unlocks and upgrades: Unlocking new Pokémon, hatching special eggs, and gaining permanent upgrades give you constant goals to work toward.
  • Daily challenges: The game features daily quests, offering extra motivation to come back regularly and making gameplay even more varied and fun.
  • Chill and relaxing: If you’re like me and get easily stressed, the fact that you heal every 10 turns and can pause anytime is a godsend.
We’ve unlocked a Dynamax Band, yay!

❌ General Cons

  • Almost-complete translation with a few missing parts: While the translation is nearly finished, some small sections remain in English. It might be a minor annoyance for non-English speakers.
  • No story or exploration: The game is entirely focused on battles and team progression. There’s no narrative or open-world exploration, which might disappoint players seeking a richer storyline.
  • Occasional stability issues: Restarting or changing runs may cause temporary freezes or progress loss, which can be frustrating during a good streak.
  • Touch controls on mobile aren’t ideal: While functional, the touchscreen controller lacks the fluidity and precision of a physical gamepad or keyboard.
  • Connection dependency: As a web game, it needs a constant internet connection. A weak connection might cause crashes or interruptions.

How Do We Recommend Playing It?

We tried the game on many devices, and although it’s widely accessible, our favorite ways to play are on the Anbernic RG406V, when we’re near a bigger screen, or on our Trimui Smart Pro, which we’ve put GammaOS Core on. Both handheld consoles have a physical controller and offer a great gaming experience — plus, the Anbernic can be connected to a TV for big-screen fun, making gameplay more immersive (even for group or couple sessions, if you can manage to keep a relationship going while addicted to this gem).

This are our top picks thanks to their accessibility and the ability of the Anbernic to play on a large screen without sacrificing performance.

Conclusion

Pokérogue is one of those perfect time-killer games — but if you’re not careful, it can suck you in for hours. The upgrade and unlock systems are so well-designed that you always feel like there’s something new just around the corner. What makes it so addictive isn’t just the turn-based combat, but the satisfaction of progressing, upgrading your team, and discovering new Pokémon to accompany you on future runs.

It’s the kind of game you can enjoy at your own pace, with no pressure — especially since you can heal every few turns and pause anytime. Fans of roguelikes and those who feel nostalgic about Pokémon will absolutely love it. It’s the kind of game where you keep saying “just one more run”… and suddenly it’s 3 AM.

And the best part? It’s just one click away — no downloads needed. Next time you need a break from the real world, you know what to play.

Who Will Enjoy It Most?

  • Pokémon fans looking for something different
  • Tactical roguelike lovers
  • Players who enjoy unlocking, upgrading, and replaying runs

Final Score

🥔 Final Score: 9/10 Potatoes
An addictive little gem — simple on the outside, deep on the inside. Perfect for quick sessions… or accidental marathons.
